my mini article on sneakerheads
Kicks/Costello
For some people, fashion maybe a way to define themselves. For sneakerheads, fashion is a way of life. A sneakerhead is a person who owns multiple pairs of shoes as a form of collection and fashion.
The birth of the sneakerhead culture came in the 1980’s and can be attributed to two main sources; basketball and hip hop music. They are usually from urban areas and major cities, where you can find many local street shops that sell sneakers.
The main types of sneakers that a sneakerhead buys are; basketball and tennis sneakers. The most popular brands are Nike, Air Jordans and Addidas. Shoes that have the most value are usually exclusive. Sneaker companies will release pairs of sneakers that have some sort of theme or they were made in limited numbers.
Sneakerheads will camp out overnight in front of stores to get an exclusive pair of sneakers because they are limited. People will pay from 100 dollars to 500 dollars for a limited pair of sneakers. Some sneakerheads will re-sell their sneakers online at higher prices that range from 1000 dollars to 5000 dollars a pair. Others will frame them or wear them.
Jared Dewberry a student and avid shoe buyer doesn’t necessarily define his self as a sneakerhead. He says that the most he will pay for a pair of sneakers is 200 dollars. He also says that camping out is a bit much just for a pair of sneakers.
Sneakerheads are really dedicated to the culture. They are willing to do as much as they can to keep up. To them sneakers are a prized possession.
